COVID-19 has changed the nature of interactions, work and leisure of Singaporeans, among them the ways in which we consume media. Here we share with you our findings from a poll conducted during the Circuit Breaker in May 2020 with 1,000 Singaporeans.
With most Singaporeans being forced to stay indoors, media consumption rose significantly. But what exactly were people doing and how were they staying informed?
Singaporeans are Shifting to Streaming
1 in 3 to 4 Singaporeans watched more videos through video sharing platforms (35%), video streaming services (32%) and livestreaming (24%) during this period.
Even Singaporean Seniors are Going Digital
Singaporeans also read more local mainstream (32%) and local alternative news (23%) online during this period. Even older Singaporeans have adopted online means to stay updated (reading via news aggregator and online local mainstream news).
It’s good to know that Singaporeans were able to ‘plug in’ as a way of coping during the Circuit Breaker. As life gradually becomes more ‘normal’ with people venturing out for work and other activities, will these new media habits prevail and even mark a ‘new normal’ in media consumption?
